Recomposition means losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time, rather than one after the other. The argument about whether it is possible is mostly an argument about who is asking. For some people it is common. For others it is close to impossible.

Fat loss and muscle gain answer to different things. Fat loss is driven by energy balance across the whole body. Muscle gain is driven by a local signal in the muscle being trained, plus building material, plus recovery. They are separate accounts, which is why one can go up while the other goes down.
What makes the combination hard is that muscle gain is easier when there is spare energy about, and fat loss requires there not to be. Recomposition happens when the training signal is strong enough to overcome that handicap, or when your body has an unusually large store of energy to draw on.
Three groups have a real shot at it:
It works least well for the lean and well-trained. If you have lifted seriously for years and are already lean, both processes are slow and they pull against each other. Most people in that position get further by doing one at a time.
That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to expect what your situation makes likely, rather than what worked for somebody in a different one.
Training that keeps asking for the muscle, in the range of effort where the signal arrives. Protein high enough to build with while energy is short, which is why a sensible protein target does not fall when calories do. And a deficit small enough that recovery survives it, because a deficit that wrecks your sleep and your sessions removes the very thing recomposition depends on.

Not from the scale. The whole point of recomposition is that the two changes partly cancel: you can be leaner and stronger after two months with your weight within a kilo of where it started. Somebody watching only the scale would conclude nothing happened.
Better signals, roughly in order of usefulness:
Time frames matter. Fat loss is visible in weeks; muscle gain is visible in months. Judging a recomposition attempt after three weeks is judging half of it.
Recomposition is slower than either process on its own. If you have a deadline, doing one thing at a time is usually faster, and choosing that is a reasonable decision rather than a failure of nerve.
And it is not a way to avoid a deficit. The fat-loss half still requires one. What changes is how steep it can afford to be, and what has to be true around it for the muscle to survive.
Yes, and it is well documented in people new to training, people returning after a break, and people carrying substantial body fat. The disagreement is about the lean, well-trained case, where it is slow enough to be hard to demonstrate.
Longer than either process alone. Fat loss shows in weeks, muscle in months, so a fair look at a recomposition attempt is a matter of months.
